CLASS MOTTO: Do the right thing, even if you think no one is watching.
E-MAIL
Parents, I check my e-mail all throughout the day. It is a great way to get instant feedback to your questions or comments, and I encourage you to contact me this way. My e-mail address is kmikesh@csisd.org and I also check my school e-mail at home.
DISCIPLINE
A respectful learning environment is crucial. I emphasize 3 rules:
1) Be respectful
2) Be responsible
3) Be safe
If a student's behavior disrupts the learning of others, that student will be reminded of the classroom and school rules and will lose money from their personal checkbook. For repeated problem behavior, students may lose some of their recess and may have to call their parent or take a note home with them.
CLASSROOM INCENTIVES AND REWARDS
Students will be given a personal checkbook that is their responsibility to keep up with. Each student will earn money for being in school. The students will earn money for other various activities such as the whole class bringing in homework, bringing back papers signed, being ready to learn, cleaning up messes, treating others with respect and kindness, etc. At the end of each six weeks, the students will be able to spend the money they have earned to buy things like homework passes, shoes off, different seating arrangements, computer passes, and other things.
HOMEWORK
POLICY: The students will be given a planner at the beginning of the year. It is the student's responsibility to write their homework in their planner.
Math: Homework is assigned daily and is due the next day in most cases. The students will sometimes have time in class to work on assignments and the rest is to be taken home for homework.
How should your papers look?
Headings - All papers should have a complete heading which includes:
First and last name followed by their assigned number
Subject
Date
Title of Assignment
REPORT CARDS
Report cards will be brought home by students a few days after the end of the six weeks. Please check "News From Our Class" to see end of the six weeks dates.
Progress reports will also be sent home. Students will receive money in their checkbook if they bring their progress report back signed the next day.
TAKE HOME FOLDERS
Work from the week will come home for you to look at each week. The folder is organized with two pockets. On one side you will find the students work for the past week. This work can be taken out and kept at home. Students are encouraged to correct any work that has a grade below a 70.
Students may receive money for a parent signature on their folder signature page if returned the next day.
ABSENCES
When students are absent, they are responsible for making up the work. Students have the same number of days they were gone to turn the work in. For example, if John misses 2 days of school, he would have 2 days after he returned to school to make up the work. Much of our classroom activities cannot be done at home (group work, experiments, in-class games, buddy class activities, etc), so regular attendance is encouraged.
CONFERENCES
Conferences are held once a year. Parents will receive information about testing data, learn about academic and social progress, and discuss questions or concerns. Additional conferences may be requested (by parent or teacher) throughout the year.
SNACKS
Students may bring a healthy snack to eat mid-morning. Good items to send for a snack would be fruits, vegetables, cheese sticks, pretzles, crackers, etc. Please DO NOT send items with lots of sugar in them (candy, cookies, cakes, soda, etc.)
SCHOOL SUPPLIES
Please make sure supplies are replenished as needed throughout the year. Sometimes there may be a class wish list posted in the "News from Our Class" link. This will include items that would be needed for extra projects or science experiments.
PARENT VOLUNTEERS
Parents play a critical role in the functioning of our classroom. In order to help in the classroom or chaperone on field trips, all volunteers must fill out the district volunteer form and be approved at least two weeks prior to the field trip. This form will be sent home but may also be requested from our office. I encourage you to fill out the form to keep your options open throughout the year. Please let me know your talents and skills and I’ll put you to work!
WATER BOTTLES
It would be great if students would bring and use a plastic water bottle with a spill-proof lid. This avoids students having to stand in line for a drink.
BOOK ORDERS
Students will have the opportunity to purchase books from the Scholastic book orders I will send home. At times, there may be more than one order form. Please, fell free to order from any of them and combine the payment.
